Angling at Bessy Beck
Year around Fly fishing for all at Bessy Beck
At Bessy Beck we provide fishing for all ability levels and all ages at in a beautiful Cumbrian setting. The lakes have been established for a number of years and have a varied fly life and they are suitable for any form of fly fishing. They are stocked from our rearing facility at Bessy Beck with Triploid Rainbow trout and blue trout.
The Island Lake (catch and release an option)
The Island Lake is our largest lake at 2 acres; the water is crystal clear to a depth of 10ft. The lake is strictly fly-only and we insist upon barb less or de barbed hooks.
This is the only lake where we allow catch and release either as a totally sporting ticket or after an agreed two or three fish are ticket. Fish are stocked from 2lbs to 12lbs the majority being between 2 and 5lbs. There are some wild Brown trout but these must always be returned. In winter fish are generally caught on lures or static buzzers yet on warmer days dry flies can be
successful. The best winter flies are cat’s whisker, black fritz, blood worm and black buzzer. Spring is normally the best time when hatches of Hawthorn fly and midge has fish rising from dawn till dusk. The best spring flies are Dry Hawthorn, black klinkhammer. Summer is weather dependant; in bright sunny conditions it is best in the evening when sedges are best. Then in autumn, Daddies and again black klinkhammers do best. The Island Lake is for the experienced fly fisherman.
The Mallard Lake (all fish must be taken)
The Mallard lake is slightly smaller than the Island at 1 ½ acres with a depth of around 10ft.
The lake is fly fishing, only with a catch and kill policy; this ensures easier fly fishing for the less experience fly fisherman or woman.
This is the perfect venue for tuition, corporate events or for those anglers who wish to take a few fish home.
The fish are stocked at between 1.25lb and 2lbs, a good eating size, extra fish above the ticket number can be taken and paid for at the going rate.
Year round fishing for all the Family
The Heron Lake (all fish must be taken)
On the Heron Lake any method is allowed with the exception of fly fishing. Fly fishing is not allowed for safety reasons.
The lake appeals to families, beginners or those who just prefer to bait fish; it is a haven for children who are welcomed on to the water under the supervision of an adult.
The fish are stocked between 0.75lb and 1.25lb and all caught must be killed and paid for at the current rate.
All tackle can be hired at a small cost and bait is provided.
Facilities
We have a fishing lodge that is heated by a pot belly stove which makes it a warm place to be even on the coldest of days. There is ample parking with male and female toilets on site.
There is a Tackle shop for all game angling requirements and a Farm shop where our fish products can be purchased.
River Fishing
Bessy Beck Trout Fishery has rods on the upper Lune for guided fishing or tuition. Tebay angling association has some beautiful water from where the Lune is little more than a burn to deep salmon holding pools.
Brown Trout
The upper Lune is much underestimated as a brown trout fishery, every year brown trout up to 3lbs are caught on fly. The larger trout tend to be caught in the spring, during summer evenings and again as the temperatures cool in autumn.
Sea Trout
Sea Trout enter the Lune as early as May each year and arrive in the upper reaches in numbers by July. They are not dependant on high water and will run in the lowest of water levels at night. Although these fish have been in decline for a number of years, there are still enough fish to give good sport, recently the upper reaches of the Lune has fished better than the middle and lower beats, for both sea trout and salmon.
We offer guided fishing day or night and can give tuition to those trying sea trout fishing for the first time.
Sea trout can be caught on fly under almost any conditions.
Salmon
The start of Salmon fishing in the Tebay area depends on rainfall, generally by the beginning of August there are enough fish present to make angling worthwhile. From then on their numbers build up, September and August being the best months. This area is suited to all methods of angling, fly, spinning and worm. We prefer to instruct fly fishing but sometimes conditions dictate that other methods are used.
