Angling Report
Mid July 2006
Fishing was best at the end of June when the weather was cool and windy. A hot spell at the beginning of July pushed up the water temperature and slowed down the fishing. There was a violent thunder storm on the 5th July, after which the lake and air temperatures cooled and many fish were caught. Now on the 15th July we are into another heat wave with air temperatures approaching 30'C.
Fish are still being caught with the best times being early morning and late evening. In the morning buzzers are generally best, epoxy midge versions, and in the evening, dry flies, sedge and daddies do well. During the hottest part of the day sunken lines with small lures are best.
Some of this months notable catches were: David Warwick from Penrith had 21 fish, largest 7lb on a Yellow Dancer and Bibio. Mike James had 10 fish on small dry fly under very difficult conditions. On the 28th JUne, Norman Avery had 10 to 8lbs on buzzers and Tony Taylor 10 also on buzzers. On the 7th July David Swales from Durham caught 16 on a small orange lure.
We expect this current heat wave to be short lived and the fishing to return to normal and as the lake temperatures cool, late summer fishing is very good with Daddy Long Legs being one of the best flies for that period.
We must make it plain to all our customers that Bessy Beck Fishery is not within the area affected with VHS disease, and we have plenty of our own reared fish for stocking our lakes. The fishing at Bessy Beck continues to be busy, so please book ahead if possible, 015396 23303.
Best regards Ian and Shelley
