Angling Report

Mid September 2006

Fishing over the last month has been slow at Bessy Beck. One angler described the fish as being lazy as great numbers could be seen but few were caught. Fish would just pull at the fly and not get hold properly, teasing the fisherman.

Water temperatures have remained very warm for the time of year and weed gave problems at the end of August which is now dying off. Heavy rain on the 6th Sept, and again on the 13th, freshened the water. On these duller days fish have been rising throughout the day, however we have also had a lot of bright and sunny days when the best fishing has been during the evenings.

Very small buzzers and small black dry flies have been the most consistant but the yellow dancer is also a successful favourite.

Robert Hopper has been highly successful on his three recent visits to Bessy Beck, he returned 14, 15 and 26 mainly on very small buzzers. Frank Vaughan had a 10.6lb trout using the trout popper. David Ashburn from Whitehaven landed 14 on one visit the largest being 5.8lb again using small buzzers and dries.

Now in the middle of September we are experiencing cooler conditions and this has kicked the trout into action. We are expecting improvements in numbers being caught. We are getting very busy even mid week, so please if possible phone and book your day, tel 015396 23303.
