Angling Report

Mid August 2007

During the second half of July the weather at Bessy Beck was as unseasonal as the rest of the country and the fish responded in the same manner not settling into any sort of taking habits. Lures were successful for most of this period but at other times fish would only look at a very small dry or buzzer.

August started slowly with fish difficult to tempt and the Island Lake was quite badly affected with algae, but now in the third week of August the algae has disappeared, the weather is fresher and the fish are taking well during the day and into the evenings.

The most successful flies recently have been Diawl Bach, Black Pennell and Shipman's Buzzer, Black and Green Buzzer with sedges doing well in the evenings.

Earlier this month Neville Capstick from Ingleton caught 13 fish using a size 12 Black Pennell. Arnold Patefield caught 15 using size 12 Diawl Bach and the largest fish of the month was 6lb 8oz caught by Tom Clayton.

The Mallard Lake is proving very popular with beginners and inexperienced fly fishers, being catch and kill only fish are fairly easy to catch giving everyone a chance to go home with a fish.

The earlier problems with pond weed and algae in the Island Lake have now been overcome and the weather is becoming more seasonable. We are now looking forward to a productive late summer and autumn.
